How To Keep Water Pipes from Freezing

During the cold winter months as outdoor temperatures plunge, water pipes in unheated areas likes garages, basements, and attics can freeze, causing you to lose your water service. It is important to protect your water pipes from freezing. Here are a few preventative measures a homeowner can do to avoid frozen water lines:

  • Insulate pipes in your Garage, Basement, Attic, and Crawl spaces
  • Wrap pipes with Heat Tape
  • Seal Leaks that allow cold air inside, near where pipes are located (around electrical wiring, dryer vents, other pipes)
  • Keep Garage Doors closed to protect water supply lines
  • Open Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinet Doors to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing
  • Don’t reduce thermostat temperatures overnight

We hope these simple tips help to prevent cold weather problems from occurring with your water lines. But if you experience a loss of water for any reason, you are always welcome to call us at Blair Township Water and Sewer Authority! We are just a phone call away!
